ARTIST STATEMENT
Hola! My name is Ariana Espinoza but I go by ARi in the art scene. I consider myself to be a narrative artist. I am influenced by Mexican, Chicano and Hispanic culture. I portray the iconography of these cultures within my work to describe themes such as: identity, tradition, religion, beauty, and the female role. I invite the viewer to observe and interrelate with my work by creating a symbolic narrative, therefore making the viewer interpret the story on their own. The Mexican/American experience is important to me, being that I am first generation Mexican/ American, I am compelled to describe my culture through personal experience and explore those qualities in my current work.
I capture the viewer’s attention with what I see and feel in regards to the Mexican/American experience. My body of work displays a variety of moods and genres; that contain symbolic elements that explore the traditional and non-traditional aspects of the culture. There is a recurring passion for the need to push traditional imagery to a more analytical level by taking customary Mexican forms and placing them in a contemporary context.

ARTIST BIO
I was born and raised in Southern California, later relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I studied painting and drawing at the Southwest University of Visual Arts and graduated with a BFA in 2011, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As an artist, I am in large part, inspired by Mexican and Hispanic culture. I work with traditional mediums but have a passion for pushing traditional imagery towards a contemporary context. At age 16, I worked for Albuquerque Mayor Jim Baca as an Art Apprentice where I was inspired to pursue my passion of painting professionally.
During a brief stay in Texas, I exhibited professionally at the Mexi-Arte Museum in downtown Austin, twice as well as the 8th Wonder Brewery in Houston, Texas. In New Mexico, I have exhibited professionally at the William Platz Gallery, Dartmouth Street Gallery, 516 Gallery, South Broadway Cultural Center, Kimo Theatre, 3017 Gallery, Wolf Martinez Gallery, Rebel Print Gallery, Rio Grande Surf Club, The Sheraton Old Town, Expo New Mexico, Southwest Arts Festival and more recently the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM.
